Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill, which allows immigrants in the country illegally to obtain a California driver's license.  Immigrant supporters have asked for the change so immigrants could drive without fear of being pulled over for a ticket, which could cause them to be deported.  The licenses will carry a special designation on the front and a notice that says the document is not federal identification and cannot be used to prove eligibility for work or public benefits.  Ten other states have passed measures to allow immigrants in the US illegally to receive driver's licenses.  These actions reflect the growing support for immigration reform across the country, especially in states that have large undocumented populations.  While this law does not change the status of many immigrants, it is a step out of the shadows similar to what the 1986 Immigration Reform Act did for many immigrants that were here before 1982.  Do you think this will have a major impact on immigrants' lives?  Do you think most Californians support this law, why or why not?

  1. I don't think that this bill is beneficial because having drones and creating a 100% safe border would cost the government a lot of money, also the fines should be terminated, if they get caught trying to cross they should just send them back if caught. One benefit is the 3,500 new jopbs that would be available.

  2. This will be a slight impact on the long run but at the beginning it might be rough because it is labeling the immigrants in this case with a different licenses. This will bring a lot of anger over the fact of discrimination in our country. Although it will help the immigrants it will also hinder them and might be unfair because of the treatment they might get. The law will work in the long run but starting off it might be a hindrance.

  3. I believe that this is help immigrants a lot. They don't have to be fearful while driving without a drivers license. But I don't understand why they can get a drivers licenses while being illegal immigrants and our country doesn't want illegal immigrants. Also, I feel like its rude for their license to have a mark saying they are illegal immigrants. Its like degrading them.

  4. Illegal immigrants should be able to get their driving license because driving is an essential thing in this country and is wrong of the government to try to treat illegal immigrants like animals.

  5. Immigrants having a drivers license would benefit them a lot, not getting deported for doing good and not messing up because they know that it is a privilege and that they could lose it. its a complicated situation and it is also no ones business sop it shouldn't have stamps stating that they are illegal immigrants.

  6. I personally believe that this will help immigrants a lot. I feel like if they have their drivers license they won't have to worry about many things they usually worry about on a daily basis. And they will be able to live their day to day life normally with not as many things to worry about. But I honestly don't believe that immigrants will be worried about being labeled as immigrants on their drivers license. Because one way or another they're still gonna be labeled as an immigrant by someone at some time.

  9. I like this, driving is something like , really simple and seeing so much stress over that is awful. Also , immigrants take the jobs Americans don't want anyways.

  10. California has a large immigrant population and a lot of my family members are backed up in ticket debts because of driving without a license. I feel like it would be beneficial for economy, if immigrants have a license they can work legally and go to college and spend $$$ on education instead of tickets. I agree with Robert. I think there should be a medium of securing the border and a path to citizenship but allowing immigrants to obtain a license is a great start.

  11. This bill will most likely have a big impact on immigrants because most of them depend on cars to take them to work and other places. Giving them a chance to have a driver's license will benefit US citizens too because like it says in the picture posted 'if immigrants don't have license, they cant drive, therefore cant get to work' but would you really want to take a nasty job no one else wants but immigrants have? i do't really think immigrants want a license to identify themselves but to use it as proof that they are able to legally drive if they are pulled over.

  12. I feel like it should be easier to get a drivers license when you're under 18, it's so hard and some teenagers don't have the money to pay for all these driving classes.

    1. I appreciate your opinion, however, the assignment was to comment on the article. The article is about immigrants & driver's licenses. In addition, the rules restricting under 18 year olds are in place in response to the poor driving records of 16 & 17 year olds. This age group is the most dangerous group of drivers.

  14. the political sketch sates that immigrants are going to take "our" jobs but yet most immigrants take the jobs other people do not want. they should be allowed to own a license because they need to get to their low paying jobs. also i don not think it makes the freeways dangerous because they drive carefully so they wont get pulled over.
