Senate Immigration Bill Explained

The US Senate passed a bill that outlined key changes in the debate about immigration.  The primary focus of the bill was securing the border.  In fact, none of the changes that offer a path to citizenship will take place unless the "border is secured."  The border will be considered secure if 90% of the people trying to cross are caught or turned back.  If these thresholds are met, then there is a path to citizenship.  This path includes requirements such as being in the US before 2011, a $500 fine and a 10 year "provisional status" after which people can apply for permanent status and pay another $1,000 fine.  There are also special programs to bring in both high skilled and low skilled workers, as well as a requirement that all employers use an electronic verification system to ensure that workers are documented.   However, the House has not supported this bill.  Why would members of the House not support this?  Do you think the border can be 90% secure, really the question is how reasonable are the requirements in this bill?

  1. I believe this can work if everyone does what they are asked to do. If all the assigned people do the best they can and follow through with their task, they can contain 90% of the immigrants and bring them back. I believe the House wants 100% kept away and doesn't want to supply the special programs for the high and low skilled workers.

  3. My first ideas come from is where, in a country in debt already, are we going to get more money to fund the border patrol. This can cause major problems since this country is already behind in the means of money. Furthermore we talk about using drones and more people which in turn would be taking more money to fund this. Not only are we going to use drones and more people we are going to build more fencing and checkpoints which would cost even more. On the link in the first section last bullet "Funding would be provided..." from where would this funding come and at what cost would it come.

  4. I believe that the process of becoming a citizen takes too long, and life doesn't wait until you have your papers, you still get tickets and get int trouble with the law. I do think that the requirements are fair; people who have been here 10 years prior to getting papers should have an easier process with no fees. The border should be more secure, and safe for the immigrants as well.

  5. I think it seems fair that they're letting people who've lived here for some time get a green card or even become permanent citizens. It also seems reasonable to let people who have studied hard in their country to let them come in to the US and use their knowledge and not just have studied for nothing. I think its also fair to let people apply for a Visa if you pay $500 and have been here since before December 2011.

  6. i think they're being reasonable. More security on the border is pointless because people will still come in. There won't be that big of a difference on the number of people sneaking in.

  7. America should not be spending all this money on border control. It's unfair how Americans are treating illegal immigrants like some sort of terrorists. Illegal immigrants are not at all a national threat to the U.S.A , there just people looking for a better lives and the jobs that lazy americans don't want. They shouldn't be treated like animals.

  8. I think that one of the things they are doing is good about how if immiagrants that have already been here for a while are able to becone citizens easiely instead are extremely hard.

  10. I think even if the border is 90% secured that we will still have illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. Yet, I still agree with Marco Rubio, i believe that immigrants only come into the U.S for a better life. Immigrants have worked so hard they should have the right to become american citizens because they take over the jobs that american citizens don't want to do.

  12. I feel it's reasonable because immigrants can get a green card or american citizenship, but also, I feel like they can try a little harder not giving these immigrants a hard time to get here. Also, I don't think ALL illegal immigrants should get deported, depending on the situation, i feel like they're here for a reason, & that reason can be how government takes too long and it's too complicated to get over here legally.

  14. I believe that the requirements are unreasonable because it will be very hard to get the border 90% secure. I also think that immigrants will also try to come to the United States whether is legally or not because they want a better life and they can't have that in their home country. I think its fair that there is a $500 fine but i think this fine shouldn't apply for people who came here as minors.

  15. i think that securing the border is a bad idea because people are still going to find a way to come. in addition how do you prove that 90% turned back.
